Liverpool are miles away from winning the Premier League as thing stand, according to Ally McCoist.

The Reds are looking to challenge for the top-flight crown in Jurgen Klopp’s second full season in charge.

The German coach was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’s successor in October 2015 after being charged with leading Liverpool to their first-ever Premier League crown.

The ex Borussia Dortmund boss guided the Reds to a top-four challenge last term to make steady progress under their charismatic manager despite some issues at the back.

Liverpool’s defensive problems have become more obvious in the 2017-18 season after conceding 12 times in their opening seven games ahead of a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday.

Worryingly for the Merseyside outfit, Liverpool have been wasteful in front of goal in recent weeks and only converted just one of their 16 chances on goal at Spartak Moscow mid-week.

Liverpool were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United last weekend after Joselu cancelled out Philippe Coutinho’s brilliant opener at St James’ Park.

Former Rangers striker McCoist warned Klopp that Liverpool are a long way from challenging for the Premier League title.

“They’re miles away,” McCoist told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They’re absolutely miles away. They’re not going to get near it.”
