Steven Gerrard sends open message to Liverpool fans about Philippe Coutinho
Steven Gerrard gives his thoughts about Philippe Coutinho and the Brazilian's difficult situation at Liverpool
Steven Gerrard has admitted that he can understand Liverpool fans’ frustrations with Philippe Coutinho after the Brazilian handed in a transfer request last week.
The Brazilian playmaker’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent days, with Barcelona thought to be keen on bringing him to Camp Nou as a replacement for Neymar.
Liverpool are already thought to have rejected at least one bid for the 25-year-old this summer, with Coutinho having only signed a new five-year contract back in January.
However, there was a fresh twist in the transfer saga on Friday when Coutinho was widely reported to have handed in a transfer request, expressing his desire to leave the club.
And Liverpool legend Gerrard says he has sympathy with Reds fans who feel upset with Coutinho’s apparent eagerness to leave the club and sign for Barcelona.
Speaking on Premier League Tonight on BT Sport on Saturday night, Gerrard said: “Coutinho in January signed a five-year deal. He is the highest-paid player at the club.
“He comes out and says he’s really happy and then the first time Barcelona come, he puts in a transfer request.
“I think the fans are frustrated, and you can understand it.”
Liverpool kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 3-3 draw at Watford on Saturday and Coutinho missed that game due to injury.
The Reds take on Hoffenheim in the first leg of their Champions League play-off clash on Tuesday night.
