Graeme Souness: Liverpool FC star should be first name on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet

The Liverpool FC legend believes Daniel Sturridge should be the first name on Jurgen Klopp's starting line-up

Graeme Souness insists Daniel Sturridge should be one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet – but only when the Liverpool striker is fully fit.

The England international made a rare start in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Newcastle United in their final Premier League game before the international break.

However, Sturridge struggled to impress despite Klopp placing his faith in the experienced 28-year-old striker following Roberto Firmino’s disappointing run of form.

The former Chelsea striker was uncharacteristically wasteful in front of goal as Sturridge was unable to help Liverpool avoid slumping to another stalemate.

Sturrige has endured an injury-hit two-year spell under Klopp but the Liverpool boss has decided to retain the striker’s services despite his poor fitness record.

Former Liverpool captain Souness believes Sturridge should still be one of the first names on Klopp’s team sheet but warned the Reds boss the centre-forward needs to be fully fit to warrant inclusion in the starting XI.

“My thinking is if he’s right, he’s one of the first names on the team sheet,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“Looking at him today, he is miles away from it.”

Sturridge scored 21 times in 28 games in Liverpool’s title challenge in the 2013-14 Premier League season when the Reds ultimately ended up in second place.

The Reds striker has only netted 16 goals in the Premier League over the past four seasons.
