Graeme Souness admits he would take a top-four finish right now if he were Liverpool manager.

The Reds have failed to win their last three Premier League games to effectively end talk of Jurgen Klopp’s side challenging for the Premier League title this season.

Liverpool started the season with plenty of optimism despite failing to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and having to wait another 12 months for RB Leipzig star Naby Keita.

The Merseyside outfit finished August with seven points after a resounding 4-0 victory over Arsenal at Anfield to fuel talk of a title challenge this term.

However, Klopp’s men have only managed to win one game in their last six outings in all competitions to leave Liverpool 12 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

The Merseyside outfit finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League after a one-season absence.

Former Liverpool captain Souness believes the Reds would happily settle for another top-four spot this season given the issues in Klopp’s team.

“If someone would guarantee me a top-four finish for Liverpool, I would sign up right now if I was the Liverpool manager,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“They are in fits and starts. With the element of doubt surrounding [Philippe] Coutinho and their vulnerability at the back, I would take top four right now.”

Liverpool have collected five points from their opening three Champions League games after a 7-0 win against Maribor was preceded by stalemates with Spartak Moscow and Sevilla.
