Alan Shearer has highlighted Liverpool’s lack of progress under Jurgen Klopp over the past 24 months.

The German coach celebrated his two-year anniversary as Liverpool boss after he took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015.

Liverpool secured a return to the Champions League last season thanks to a credible fourth-place finish under the former Borussia Dortmund coach.

However, the Reds manager has failed to resolve their long-standing defensive issues which is flaw which ultimately cost Rodgers his job.

Liverpool have already conceded 12 goals in seven games in the Premier League so far this season – more than any other team in the top half of the table.

The Merseyside outfit will host Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday as the Red Devils looks to cement their progress under Jose Mourinho with a win at their rivals.

The Red Devils were initially in decline under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal but Mourinho has managed to reverse their ailing fortunes.

Former Newcastle striker Shearer pointed out Klopp has a worse record than both Rodgers at Liverpool and Moyes at Manchester United.

“It is two years since Jurgen Klopp took charge with Liverpool lying tenth after eight games of the 2015-16 season.

“Today they sit seventh after seven games — hardly giant strides,” Shearer told The Sun.

“Two cup finals, both of which they lost, and a return to the Champions League can be put on Klopp’s CV.

“But really they have not improved since the day he took over.

“He has a win rate of 49.5 per cent, which is less than Brendan Rodgers and also less than David Moyes when United sacked him.”

Klopp signed four players in the summer transfer window but failed to recruit a top-class centre-half after missing out on Virgil van Dijk.
