Roy Keane has criticised Liverpool for “schoolboy defending” after Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla.

The Reds missed out on the chance to register three points in their first Champions League group-stage campaign of the 2017-18 campaign.

Liverpool made a disappointing start after Wissam Ben Yedder capitalised on Dejan Lovren’s mistake in the fifth minute at Anfield.

The home side found their feet in the clash and Liverpool were level through Brazil international Roberto Firmino midway through the first half.

Summer signing Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a slender lead with a deflected strike before Firmino missed the chance to score his second of the night from the spot.

Liverpool were on top for most of the Champions League clash but Sevilla restored parity with 18 minutes remaining after Argentine midfielder Joaquin Correa managed to find a way past Klopp’s defence.

Former Manchester United captain Keane, who won the competition in 1999, isn’t impressed with Liverpool’s defending at the start of the 2017-18 season.

“This [poor defending] sums up Liverpool in a nutshell, and why they’re not going to win any big prizes,” Keane told ITV Sport.

“Just switching off from a throw in, leads to the equaliser. In such an important game, at such an important moment.

“Experienced players just switching off. It must drive the manager crazy as it’s just schoolboy defending. It’s the easiest part of football… just switching on.

“Liverpool did all the hard stuff really well, in terms of creating chances, pace, power and quality going forward, but Liverpool can’t seem to do the easy things.”

Liverpool lost 5-0 to title rivals Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend to end their unbeaten start to the 2017-18 campaign.

The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window but failed to land their top defensive target Virgil van Dijk.
