Peter Schmeichel has laughed off talk of Liverpool winning the Premier League title this season.

The Reds harbour title ambitions but have made a difficult start to the 2017-18 campaign despite adding four new players to their squad in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool made an unbeaten start to the Premier League season after collecting seven points from their opening three games to leave them two points behind the Manchester clubs at end of August.

The Merseyside outfit were thrilling 4-0 winners against Arsenal at Anfield last month to lay down a marker in the title race and prompt talk of Klopp’s men challenging for the title.

However, Liverpool lost 5-0 to Manchester City at The Etihad in their first game in September before a 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield to leave the Reds seven points adrift of the pacesetters.

The 18-time English champions returned to winning ways last weekend thanks to a 3-2 win against Leicester City but Klopp’s defence has now conceded 11 times in six games so far.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Schmeichel told Klopp’s team to forget about winning the Premier League title this season.

“I can’t believe Jurgen Klopp has not addressed the clear problem,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports. “And still they think they can win the Premier League this season.

“They still believe they are in that bracket. I think they are far away as they will concede far too many goals. They’ll score lots of goals too and win some games 4-0 like they did against Arsenal – but they are also a team that can lose 4-0.”

Liverpool will make the trip to Newcastle United in their next Premier League game on Sunday afternoon.
