Mikael Silvestre insists Liverpool will still be in the title race even if Jurgen Klopp’s men are 12 points behind the Premier League leaders at end of October.

The Merseyside outfit made a solid start to the Premier League season with two victories and a draw in their opening three games.

However, Liverpool have managed to win just one game in their last five Premier League fixtures to leave Klopp’s side nine points behind leaders Manchester City.

The Reds have already conceded 12 times in eight games and were held to a goalless draw by Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday.

Klopp led Liverpool to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League in his first full season in charge.

The Merseyside outfit have never won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.

Former Manchester United defender Silvestre believes Liverpool are still title contenders despite their recent struggles.

“Even if United win it’s too early to say this [that Liverpool are out of the race] because Liverpool have the quality to string together a long run and it’s still only October,” said Silvestre, speaking exclusively to 888sport before the goalless draw at Anfield on Saturday.

“So it’s too early to bury Liverpool.”

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League last season to secure a return to the Champions League following a two-season absence.

The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window to bolster their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.
