Paul Merson tells Liverpool to make this signing right now
Paul Merson is urging Liverpool FC to bring in another new defender before the close of the summer transfer window
Paul Merson has urged Liverpool to bring in a new defender before transfer deadline day.
The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Southampton centre-half Virgil van Dijk this summer but a move has failed to materialise.
Jurgen Klopp has brought in three new players this summer after having tied up deals for Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Dominic Solanke.
However, after the Reds booked their place in the group stage of the Champions League last week, attentions will now be focused on whether Klopp will be able to bring in any more new players before the transfer deadline on Thursday night.
And former Arsenal star Merson is convinced that the Reds need to bring in defensive reinforcements this summer if they are to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Saturday, Merson said: “I think they need another defender,” Merson said on Sky Sports.
“I think they need a defender but I don’t think the Van Dijk thing is going to happen.
“Surely they’ve got a Plan B, surely?
“I just don’t see Liverpool winning the Premier League with that defence. Going forward they’re great.”
Liverpool will take on Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Maribor in the group stage of Europe’s elite club competition after they booked their spot thanks to a 6-3 aggregate win over Hoffenheim last week.
The Reds are looking to challenge for the Premier League title this season after they finished in fourth place in the table last term.
