Rio Ferdinand names Liverpool FC’s main weakness this season
Rio Ferdinand discusses Liverpool FC's start to the new season and their shaky defence
Rio Ferdinand believes that Liverpool need to improve their defending this season if they are to challenge for the top honours.
The Reds have earned plenty of praise for the free-flowing attacking style they have showcased since Jurgen Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.
However, the Merseyside outfit have also been criticised for their lack of strong defending in recent games this season, with the Reds having conceded seven goals in their last two outings.
Liverpool were thrashed 5-0 by Manchester City at the weekend and conceded another two goals on Wednesday night as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Sevilla in the Champions League at Anfield.
And although former Manchester United defender Ferdinand has been very impressed by Liverpool going forward this season, he feels that the Reds are still weak at the back.
Speaking on BT Sport on Wednesday night, Ferdinand said: “The word ‘balance’ is key for this Liverpool team.
“They are fantastic going forward. They’ve got great pace. Defensively they’ve got to sharpen up. They’ve got a soft centre.”
Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon when they host Burnley at Anfield looking to get back to winning ways in the top flight.
The Reds are currently in eighth place in the Premier League table after having won two of their opening four top-flight games this season.
