Philippe Coutinho is not happy after Liverpool FC thrashing by Tottenham
Philippe Coutinho has his say after Liverpool FC's thrashing by Tottenham on Sunday
Philippe Coutinho has told his Liverpool team-mates that they must quickly step their game up following their humiliating 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Reds were thoroughly outplayed by the north London side and conceded two sloppy goals early on as the Lilywhites notched up an impressive victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side.
It has been a slow start to the season for Liverpool, who already find themselves 12 points behind leaders Manchester City in the race for the title.
The Reds are ninth in the table and have only won three of their opening nine games so far this season.
And Coutinho admits that the whole of the Liverpool team – not just the defenders – need to improve their game quickly.
Coutinho told ESPN Brasil: “They were goals that could have been avoided.
“Starting from out wide, they ended up being silly goals.
“The manager said quite a lot about how they would try goals like that and, of course, in defence we have to play a decent game. We were in the game, but the third goal in the first half was a low.
“It’s not just about the defence, it’s about the whole team, because the first goal started out wide, where everyone is involved in defending, not just the wingers or full-backs.”
Coutinho was heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool in the summer but the Reds opted to ignore the interest from Barcelona and keep hold of the 25-year-old.
Liverpool will look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they take on Huddersfield Town at Anfield next weekend.
The Terriers head into that game fresh from having secured a surprise 2-1 win over Manchester United at the weekend.
