Gary Neville: Liverpool FC star is mobile and quick, I’m very impressed
Gary Neville admits he was very impressed by Joe Gomez's display for Liverpool FC on Saturday and says he could make the England squad for the World Cup
Gary Neville has admitted that he was very impressed by Joe Gomez’s performance for Liverpool against Manchester United on Saturday – and says he could challenge for a place in the England squad for next summer’s World Cup.
The 20-year-old defender was named as the man of the match as Liverpool had to settle for a goalless draw with the Red Devils at Anfield in Saturday’s Premier League clash on Merseyside.
Gomez has been a regular fixture in the Liverpool team so far this season, featuring in six of the Reds’ eight Premier League games this term.
Neville was very impressed by Gomez’s performance against Manchester United on Saturday and the former defender is tipping him to challenge for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for next summer’s tournament in Russia.
Speaking on Sky Sports after Saturday’s game, Neville said: “I think he could be a late charge for a World Cup spot in terms of pushing for that position.
“He’s mobile, he’s quick, he’s good on the ball, he’s solid. I was really impressed with him.”
Gomez will be hoping to feature for Liverpool when the Reds return to Champions League action on Tuesday night with a trip to Maribor.
The Reds will then look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley at the weekend.
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season.
