Neville: Why Liverpool FC can’t complain about defensive crisis

Phil Neville believes Liverpool can’t complain about their back four given their pitiful investment in defenders under Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds lost 4-1 to top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur last weekend to raise serious questions about their failure to improve their defence since Klopp’s appointment.

Liverpool have conceded 15 times in five goals on the road in the Premier League this season, which is more goals than conceded than Crystal Palace.

Klopp inherited Dejan Lovren from his predecessor Brendan Rodgers, while the former Borussia Dortmund coach made the decision to sell Mamadou Sakho in the summer.

The German manager signed Joel Matip in a free transfer from Schalke 04 last summer, while the Reds signed Ragnar Klavan in a £4.7m deal from Mainz.

Former Manchester United defender Neville believes the Reds are paying the price for a lack of investment in their defence.

“Look at the players they’ve bought. Robertson for £8m, Klavan for £5m and Matip on a free transfer,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“With that cheap spending on an area of the field where Liverpool are very weak, that’s why you’re getting those results. With that kind of spending, you get that level of performance.

“You’ve got to go out and buy the best. Man United signed Bailly in a £30m. They’re getting that type of return.”

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League.

The Reds have signed 11 players since Klopp took over the reins at the Anfield outfit back in 2015.
