Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool FC should have signed 24-year-old
Robbie Savage believes that Liverpool FC should have tried to sign Michael Keane in the summer transfer window
Robbie Savage believes that Liverpool should have made a summer transfer move to sign Michael Keane after it became clear that they wouldn’t be able to land Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
The Reds were heavily linked with a move to bring the Netherlands international to Anfield during the summer transfer window but they failed to secure a deal for the defender.
Liverpool were forced to issue a public apology to Southampton and withdraw their interest in Van Dijk after they were accused of an alleged illegal approach by the south coast club.
The fact that Liverpool were clearly interested in Van Dijk means that Klopp had already accepted the fact that he wanted to bolster his defence in the summer.
And former midfielder Savage believes that the Reds should have gone all out to try and sign 24-year-old defender Keane before he ended up moving to Everton.
Savage wrote in his column for the Daily Mirror: “I don’t understand why Klopp didn’t go for Michael Keane when it became clear Saints weren’t going to play ball over Van Dijk.”
He added: “At the top end of the pitch, Klopp’s team is entitled to be inventive, expansive and dynamic.
“But at the other end, they have to be more disciplined, ruthless and consistent.”
Liverpool were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Burnley at Anfield on Saturday as they dropped Premier League points for the second weekend in a row.
The Reds will aim to get back to winning ways in the top flight when they travel to Leicester City next weekend.
