Jose Mourinho sends message to Jurgen Klopp after Man United’s draw at Liverpool FC
Jose Mourinho reflects on Liverpool FC's goalless draw with Manchester United at Anfield
Jose Mourinho claimed Jurgen Klopp “did well” with his tactical approach after Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
Both sides had chances to open the scoring in the first half, with Joel Matip coming close for the hosts and Romelu Lukaku seeing his shot saved by Simon Mignolet.
However, neither team were able to break the deadlock as the game ended up goalless for the second season running at Anfield.
The result suited Manchester United, who remained second in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City after eight games of the new campaign.
Mourinho had set his team up to soak up pressure from Liverpool and try and catch the Reds on the counter-attack.
However, the Red Devils were unable to find a way past the Reds defence on Merseyside as they settled for a point.
And speaking at his post-match news conference, Mourinho congratulated Klopp for his tactical approach.
Mourinho said: “I think he [Klopp] did well. He didn’t let the game break.
“I think [Jesse] Lingard and [Marcus] Rashford were waiting for the game to break but it did not. I think they were very good team from a defensive point of view, much pressing.
“The only chance I had to change the direction of the game was to bring players on with speed and maybe, they are going to change their formation but they didn’t.
“The second half was like a game of chess but my opponent didn’t open the door for me to win the game.”
Manchester United return to Champions League action on Wednesday night with a crunch clash against Benfica in Portugal.
The Red Devils have won both of their opening Champions League games so far this season – against Basel and CSKA Moscow.
