Guillem Balague gives latest update about Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool FC
Guillem Balague delivers the latest update on reports linking Barcelona with a new move for Liverpool FC star Philippe Coutinho
Guillem Balague has claimed that Barcelona are planning to make a €80m (£71m) bid to sign Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool in the January transfer window.
The Spanish giants were heavily linked with a move to sign the playmaker from Liverpool during the summer transfer window but they were unable to conclude a deal for the Brazilian playmaker as the Reds refused to sell.
Coutinho was clearly keen on a move to Camp Nou and even handed in a transfer request in a bid to force a switch away from Anfield.
However, Liverpool held firm and opted not to cash in on the talented playmaker.
Coutinho has since been reintegrated into first-team affairs at Anfield but it now remains to be seen whether Barcelona will reignite their interest in the playmaker in January.
And Spanish football expert Balague has delivered the latest update on on Barcelona’s reported interest in signing Coutinho.
Balague told Sky Sports: “If you ask most people they will agree it doesn’t make much sense for Liverpool to sell Coutinho in January but Barcelona will still try.
“They will put about €80m (£71m) on the table and will look to test Liverpool’s resolve. Barca feel the conditions are still there for the player to leave – they think he will still be very useful to them considering the departure of Neymar as he has not been replaced.
“Remember Barca did not want Coutinho until they started to use him as a way to keep Neymar from PSG. Once Neymar left they realised he could fill that gap anyway.
“This transfer now enters the phase of wait and see what happens in January. Barca will bid €80m, it’s just for Liverpool to decide. Has their resolve softened? Or will they stay strong again like the summer?”
Liverpool suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss to Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday afternoon as the Reds’ title hopes took another blow.
The Merseyside outfit are already 12 points behind leaders Manchester City after just nine games of the new Premier League season.
