Gary Lineker sends message to Liverpool FC after Man City win the title
Gary Lineker takes to social media to praise Manchester City and Liverpool FC after the Citizens successfully defended their Premier League title
Gary Lineker has taken to social media to praise “extraordinary” Liverpool FC after Manchester City pipped the Reds to the Premier League title.
Liverpool FC headed into the final day of the season in second place in the Premier League table and a point behind the Citizens.
The Reds needed to win their game against Wolves and hope that Manchester City dropped points away to Brighton and Hove Albion.
Although Brighton did take an early lead, Manchester City soon fought back to claim a 4-1 victory on the south coast, with Liverpool FC’s 2-0 win over Wolves ending up to be futile.
Liverpool FC amassed 97 points, which is a record points tally for any team not to have won the title in Premier League history.
Jurgen Klopp’s men also only lost one game in the top flight all season as they pushed Manchester City for the trophy throughout the campaign.
And former England star Lineker took to social media after the game to praise both sides after the thrilling end to the campaign.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Congratulations to @ManCity on being the first club to retain the Premier League title for 10 years. A simply magnificent season. Congratulations too to @LFC. To finish 2nd on 97 points with only one defeat is extraordinary. A simply magnificent season.”
Former Arsenal star Ian Wright also offered his congratulations to Manchester City after the final whistle, writing on Twitter: “Congratulations Manchester City retained under incredible pressure. I tipped Liverpool and got a great run for my money! But @ManCity you’re a magnificent football team. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.”
And finally, former goalkeeper David James also added his thoughts on Twitter: “Congratulations @ManCity, worthy @premierleague champions! The only team @LFC didn’t beat and the only team to beat them.”
Liverpool FC will now switch their attentions back towards European affairs and the preparations for their Champions League final showdown against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid on 1 June.
