Nabil Fekir would be a good addition to the Liverpool FC squad this summer, according to England legend John Barnes.

The Merseyside outfit are believed to have come within a whisker of sealing a deal to sign Fekir from Lyon last summer but the move fell through at the final hour after Liverpool FC expressed concerns about an old knee injury during his medical.

The 25-year-old attacker ended up staying at Lyon and he scored 12 goals and made nine assists in all competitions for the French club last season.

Reports in the media last week suggested that Liverpool FC may be ready to reignite their interest in signing the France international this summer as Jurgen Klopp ponders making some attacking recruits.

Liverpool FC legend Barnes, who was speaking to The Sport Review on behalf of bookmaker comparison site BonusCodeBets.co.uk, believes that Fekir could be a good signing – but he doesn’t expect the Reds to be too busy this summer in the transfer market.

Asked about Liverpool FC’s reported interest in Fekir, Barnes told The Sport Review: “Yes, he [Fekir] would be a good addition to the squad.

“But, it’s going to be difficult to get into the front three [of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino].

“If you look at the way Xherdan Shaqiri played, he could feature as one of the midfield three as well. It’s always good to have quality to help the squad. But it’s pure speculation until it happens.”

Barnes continued: “I don’t necessarily feel that Liverpool are desperate to sign anybody because of the squad they have, and with two new players coming back in terms of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez, who didn’t feature last year. We’ve still got Adam Lallana.

“It could be good for the squad but I don’t think we’re desperate to sign anybody.”

Liverpool FC will be looking to challenge for the Premier League title next season once again after they finished just a point behind champions Manchester City this term.

The Reds won their first major trophy under Klopp last season when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final in Madrid.
