Paul Merson: Liverpool FC star will be disappointed after awards ceremony
Paul Merson says Virgil van Dijk should have won the Fifa Men's Best Player of the year award ahead of Lionel Messi
Paul Merson believes that Virgil van Dijk should have won the Fifa Men’s Best player of the year for 2019 ahead of Lionel Messi.
The Argentina international landed the award ahead of Van Dijk and old rival Cristiano Ronaldo at an awards ceremony in Milan on Monday night.
Messi helped FC Barcelona to win La Liga last season but Van Dijk was part of the side that knocked the Spanish giants out of the Champions League and went on to win the competition last term.
And former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes that Van Dijk would have been a worthy winner of the award ahead of Messi.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Express, Merson said: “Not [the right winner] for me, no not for me.
“I think Van Dijk [should have won]. I mean, second in the Premier League but they won the Champions League.
“I know Messi’s scored his goals but he hasn’t taken his team to the next level.
“I don’t know where he was when they were at Anfield in the second leg.
I think he can be very disappointed Van Dijk that he hasn’t won that, in my opinion.”
Van Dijk and his Liverpool FC team-mates have made a brilliant start to the new season, having won all six of their opening games in the top flight to leave them five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
They will return to Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime when they travel to Sheffield United in the top flight looking to make it seven wins on the spin and keep their place at the top.
