‘Special’: Pep Guardiola has his say on Liverpool FC’s start to the season
Pep Guardiola reacts to Liverpool FC's comeback win over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday
Pep Guardiola says Liverpool FC have shown a “special character” this season following their strong start to the Premier League campaign under Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds came from a goal down to clinch a dramatic 2-1 victory at Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon to keep their title bid on track.
Liverpool FC had been trailing to Trezeguet’s opener at Villa Park but Andy Robertson headed in an equaliser in the 87th minute, before Sadio Mane netted a crucial winner for the visitors in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
The result left Liverpool FC six points clear at the top of the Premier League table after 11 games and heading into Sunday’s crunch clash between the top two teams at Anfield.
Liverpool FC have shown character to come from behind in their recent two Premier League games against both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
And Guardiola believes that the results are a testament to the “special” character Klopp has developed in his team.
Speaking to BBC Sport on Saturday, Guardiola said: “If it’s one time, two times, ‘we were lucky, we were lucky’, but it [Liverpool FC’s late goals] happened in the last two seasons many, many times. They have a special character to do that.
“We look at ourselves, we know which team we face, I think they have won 10 and drawn one. Next week we go to Anfield to try to play them.”
Guardiola also aimed a thinly-veiled dig at Mane after the Senegal international netted Liverpool FC’s winner on Saturday.
He continued: “It has happened many times, what Liverpool have done, in the last few years, it’s because [Mane] is a special talent.
“Sometimes he’s diving, sometimes he has this talent to score incredible goals in the last minute. He’s a talent.”
Manchester City will travel to Anfield on Sunday looking to claim a victory and cut Liverpool FC’s lead down to three points.
