Liverpool urged to sign proven striker from rivals if Coutinho leaves
Stuart Pearce reckons Liverpool should move for Diego Costa this summer if Philippe Coutinho leaves Anfield
Stuart Pearce has told Liverpool to consider making a move to sign Diego Costa from Chelsea if Philippe Coutinho leaves Anfield this summer.
Coutinho’s future has been a relentless source of speculation this summer amid reports that Barcelona are keen on bringing him to Camp Nou as a replacement for Neymar, who joined Paris Saint-Germain.
However, Liverpool appear to be determined not to let their prized asset leave Anfield this summer as Jurgen Klopp aims to get his team challenging for trophies on four fronts this season.
Costa’s future at Chelsea has also been a relentless source of speculation, with the Spanish striker deemed surplus to requirements by Antonio Conte.
The forward is currently in self-imposed exile in his native Brazil as he bids to try and force through a transfer away from Stamford Bridge this summer.
And former Manchester City boss Pearce reckons Liverpool should bring in both Costa and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk should Coutinho leave Anfield this summer.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Monday morning, Pearce said: “They [should] go and get Costa from Chelsea and Van Dijk from Southampton.
“Balance the books accordingly. You have to make a statement.
“I think Liverpool fans are very patient and understanding, I think if you’re talking in excess of £100m for this player [Coutinho] and he wants to go, I’d be tempted to take the money and wish him all the best.”
Liverpool are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday afternoon as they look to make it back to back home wins.
