Rio Ferdinand reacts to Liverpool FC’s 2-0 win over Tottenham
Rio Ferdinand has his say after Liverpool FC seal a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to win the Champions League final
Rio Ferdinand insisted that it was not important how Liverpool FC played as they secured a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur to win the Champions League trophy on Saturday night.
The Reds headed into the game looking to win the competition for the sixth time and after having lost last year’s final to Real Madrid.
Liverpool FC raced into the lead and found themselves 1-0 up inside two minutes, when Mohamed Salah scored his penalty after Mohamed Sissoko was penalised for handball.
It was something of a subdued game but Tottenham grew into it and created some good chances towards the end of the second half.
However, it was Liverpool FC who were to score the telling goal, when Divock Origi fired home a precise finish in the 87th minute to wrap up victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Former Manchester United and England defender Ferdinand believes that this is now Liverpool FC’s time to shine.
Speaking to BT Sport after the final whistle, Ferdinand said: “We’ve all played in finals – it’s about getting over the line and winning the trophy.
“Not one of those fans or players will care how they played today – they got the job done.
“Klopp’s been to many finals and been on the losing side – getting over the line by any means necessary is the way to do it.”
Ferdinand continued: “This season they’ve been fantastic, and if they had finished without a trophy, it would have been a devastating blow for this football club.
“This could be the start of a successful period of winning trophies for this club. They’re primed for it.”
The victory secured Liverpool FC’s first major trophy under Klopp since his appointment in 2015, and their first Champions League triumph since that famous win in Istanbul back in 2005.
The Reds will now set their sights on winning the Premier League trophy next season after missing out to Manchester City this term.
