Rio Ferdinand names the signing Liverpool FC must make this summer
Rio Ferdinand says Jurgen Klopp's priority in the summer transfer window will be to bolster his Liverpool FC defence
Rio Ferdinand believes that Jurgen Klopp’s priority in the summer transfer window will be strengthening his Liverpool FC defence.
The Reds have been earning plenty of praise for their impressive attacking performances this season under the German manager, but there are still significant doubts about their defensive solidity.
Liverpool FC took a giant stride towards the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night when they secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Porto in the last 16 first leg.
But for all of the Reds’ impressive attacking play, former Manchester United star Ferdinand still feels that they are susceptible at the back.
Speaking to BT Sport on Wednesday night, Ferdinand said: “That will be one of the top things on Klopp’s list [strengthening the defence].
“He’s got a fantastic attacking team there and it’s all about getting that balance right, defensively and attacking-wise.
“When you look at the front players they’ve got, Firmino, Salah, Mane – great players. These boys can beat anyone on their day.”
Liverpool FC are currently in third place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification for the second season running under Klopp.
The Reds will not return to Premier League action until 24 February, when they host West Ham United at Anfield in the top flight.
Liverpool FC are still searching for their first trophy since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield as Brendan Rodgers’ permanent successor back in 2015.
They will take on FC Porto in the return leg of their Champions League clash on 6 March at Anfield.
