Brendan Rodgers replies when asked about Leicester catching Liverpool FC
Brendan Rodgers opens up about the chances of his Leicester City side challenging Liverpool FC for the title
Brendan Rodgers has played down suggestions that his Leicester City side will be able to maintain a Premier League title challenge with Liverpool FC this season.
The Foxes have been in brilliant form this season and they have won 12 of their opening 16 Premier League games to leave them in second place in the table.
Leicester sealed a 4-1 win against Aston Villa at the weekend to leave them in second place and eight points behind Liverpool FC, who are yet to lose a game this term.
Manchester City are a further six points behind the Foxes, leaving Liverpool FC and Leicester the main challengers for the title as things stand.
However, despite their brilliant recent form, Rodgers has moved to play down suggestions that his side can maintain a serious title challenge throughout the season.
Speaking after the win against Villa on Sunday, Rodgers insisted that he was still happy for his side to be left out of the conversation when it comes to the title race.
“I don’t think anyone expects us to be near the top,” Rodgers said.
“After Manchester United won at Manchester City on Saturday, the caption came up about how far City are away from Liverpool.
“We respect that, we get on with our work and keep developing as a team.
“It’s just natural, Man City and Liverpool are both incredible teams.
“We know we are looking to improve and close the gap. We have finished ninth in the last two seasons but today we looked like a top team.
“It was a real historic day, to surpass the club record of straight wins in the top flight was fantastic for us.”
Liverpool FC are in Champions League action on Tuesday night when they travel to RB Salzburg in their final group game.
After that, they will host Watford at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime as they look to continue their stunning start to the new campaign.
