Raheem Sterling has insisted that he was “really happy” to see his former club Liverpool FC lift the Champions League trophy last season.

The Reds came within a whisker of winning the Premier League last season but they ended up a point behind Manchester City in the top-flight table.

Liverpool FC, however, managed to end the campaign on a positive note when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final back in June to win their first major trophy under Jurgen Klopp.

Sterling left Liverpool FC to sign for Manchester City in July 2015 and the England international has insisted that he was pleased to see his former club claim European glory last term.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Sky Sports, Sterling said: “I was really happy for them, happy for some of the players I know to lift the Champions League.

“The Champions League is massive for us as a club but our most important thing is winning the Premier League. That’s our main objective going into this season.

“Yes, it’d be nice to win the Champions League but first and foremost we want to win the league. The Premier League is your bread and butter, every weekend, what you train for every day.

“The Champions League is the nicer looking one, the most prestigious as people say, but every weekend you put in a shift, you’re going to tough places.

“You’re off to Crystal Palace, Burnley. It’s tough. You put so much time into it.”

Sterling, 24, scored 17 goals and made 10 assists in 34 Premier League games to help Manchester City retain the title under Pep Guardiola last season.

Liverpool FC will now have their sights set on going one step further in the Premier League next season as they aim to try and win the top flight title.

The Reds will kick off their new Premier League campaign with a home clash against Norwich City at Anfield on 8 August.
