Steven Gerrard: What I really think of Loris Karius at Liverpool FC now
Steven Gerrard praises Loris Karius for his improved performances for Liverpool FC this season
Steven Gerrard has praised Loris Karius for the way in which he has raised his game for Liverpool FC in recent weeks.
The German goalkeeper seemed to be struggling for confidence at Anfield following his arrival at the club from Bundesliga side Mainz in the summer of 2016.
Neither he nor Simon Mignolet were particularly impressive for the Reds in the opening few months of the season and Jurgen Klopp seemed to struggle to be able to decide between the duo.
However, Karius has looked more assured between the posts in recent games and he helped the Reds to keep a clean sheet as they thrashed Watford 5-0 in the Premier League on Saturday night at Anfield.
And former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard feels that the goalkeeper deserves praise for his recent solid form for the Merseyside outfit.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday, Gerrard said: “Jurgen has told Karius he’s the number one now – and to be fair to him, he’s raised his game.
“There has definitely been a big improvement in the [whole] back unit.”
Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action after the international break with a trip to Crystal Palace on 31 March.
The Reds are currently in third place in the table as they look to close the gap to second-placed Manchester United before the season is out.
Liverpool FC will take on Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals next month.
