Danny Murphy has admitted his delight at seeing Virgil van Dijk get his Liverpool FC career off to a flying start by scoring the winner in the 2-1 FA Cup win over Everton on Friday night.

The Netherlands international completed his big-money transfer to Anfield last week as the Reds agreed a deal to sign him from Southampton.

Van Dijk replaced Dejan Lovren in the starting line-up at Anfield on Friday night as Liverpool FC took on bitter local rivals Everton in the third round of the FA Cup.

The game looked to be heading towards a replay after Gylfi Sigurdsson cancelled out James Milner’s penalty to make it 1-1 heading into the final few minutes at Anfield.

However, it was Van Dijk who had the final say when he headed home the winner six minutes from time to cap a remarkable debut for the Dutchman.

And former Liverpool FC star Murphy has admitted that he was delighted to see Van Dijk kick off his Liverpool FC career in style.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Murphy said: “I am really pleased for Virgil van Dijk, not just because I predicted it, sometimes these things are meant to be.

“Liverpool can have a really good go at winning this FA Cup. They are still in the Champions League but (winning) that is unrealistic.”

Liverpool FC now switch their attentions towards their crunch Premier League clash against leaders Manchester City at Anfield next Sunday.

The Reds are currently fourth in the table.
