Neil Lennon believes that Virgil van Dijk should have won the men’s player award at the Best Fifa Football ceremony on Monday.

Lionel Messi was handed the prize ahead of both Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo despite the Liverpool FC defender having won the PFA player of the year last season.

Van Dijk was also crowned the Uefa Men’s player of the year for 2018-19 after a sparkling season for the Reds in which he helped them secure Champions League glory.

Messi, meanwhile, helped FC Barcelona to win the Spanish league title last season.

And Celtic boss Lennon feels that Van Dijk should have won the Fifa award ahead of Messi and Ronaldo this time around.

Lennon is quoted as saying by Sky Sports: “Messi is Messi and, if you look at the numbers, we probably take it for granted what he does because he just does it so well on a regular basis.

“But I thought Virgil was the outstanding player in domestic and European football this year and he deserved to win it. I’m disappointed for him.”

Van Dijk will be expecting to start for Liverpool FC when the Reds return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon with a trip to Sheffield United.

The Reds have won all six of their opening Premier League games this season to build a five-point lead ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table.

Liverpool FC are aiming to go one step further in the English top flight this season after they finished a point behind the Citizens last term.
