New Liverpool FC signing explains why he picked his shirt number
Virgil van Dikj explains why he has picked the number four shirt at Liverpool FC following his move from Southampton
Virgil van Dijk has lifted the lid on why he has picked the number four shirt at Liverpool FC following his move to the Merseyside club from Southampton.
Liverpool FC confirmed that they had agreed a deal to land the defender from Southampton last week in a move thought to be worth as much as £75m.
Van Dijk was heavily linked with a transfer to Liverpool FC in the summer window but a move failed to materialise for the Netherlands defender.
He has now, though, finally completed his dream transfer to Anfield and will be hoping to hold down a regular spot in the first team between now and the end of the season.
Van Dijk has opted to take the number four shirt at Liverpool FC and the defender has lifted the lid on exactly why he picked that particular digit.
Speaking to Liverpool FC’s website, Van Dijk said: “I had No.4 when I played for Groningen back in Holland, so I was always a big fan of No.4 anyway.
“Unfortunately at Southampton, my good friend Jordy Clasie had No.4, so I didn’t want to take it from him!
“I just like No.4. Obviously here, Sami Hyypia had it here as well and played for my team where I played 10 years in Holland, Willem II, so it’s a bit special.”
Van Dijk will be hoping to feature for Liverpool FC when they are in FA Cup third round action against Merseyside rivals Everton at Anfield on Friday night.
The Reds are aiming to at least break back into the top four this season and secure Champions League qualification once again.
