Jurgen Klopp makes confident Liverpool prediction about Champions League
The Liverpool manager is confident the Reds will qualify for the Champions League knockout phase
Jurgen Klopp is adamant that Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League knockout phase despite a winless start to Group E.
The Reds failed to secure their first group-stage win in Russia on Tuesday night after Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow.
Liverpool number two Loris Karis was criticised for failing to keep out a straightforward free-kick from Fernando in the 20th minute.
The Reds equalised before half-time when Philippe Coutinho combined superbly with Sadio Mane before the Brazilian finished in style to score his first Champions League goal.
Liverpool had 16 shots on goal but couldn’t find a winner as the Reds failed to convert a dominance Champions League display into three points for the second successive game.
The Merseyside outfit drew 2-2 with Spanish side Sevilla in their Champions League group-stage opener after squandering a lead with 18 minutes to go at Anfield.
Liverpool will face Estonian side Maribor home and away in their next two Champions League fixtures which should give the Reds the chance to take a big step towards qualification.
Speaking at his post-match media conference on Tuesday night following the stalemate in Moscow, Klopp backed his team to reach the last 16.
“Yes, of course I have seen enough,” Klopp said.
“We know more about the two teams now, we were in both games the better side. We know Moscow have a lot of injury problems tonight, for sure Quincy Promes will be back for the next game and a few other players, really good players, so that will change their game also. But what is confidence? In football you can never be sure.
“Yes, we are strong enough to go through this group, but we have to do it; when the door is open, you still have to walk through it and the door is not even open, we can [just] see a little bit of light in behind. But we will be ready to go through because the boys really work hard.”
