John Barnes: 26-year-old does have Liverpool FC future
The Liverpool FC legend believes Alberto Moreno does have a future at the Anfield side if the Spanish defender is willing to be a squad player
John Barnes believes Alberto Moreno does have a future at Liverpool FC if the Spanish defender is willing to be a squad player.
The Spain international has been out of favour throughout much of the 2018-19 Premier League season so far to raise questions about his long-term future at Old Trafford.
Moreno has been playing second fiddle to Andy Robertson in the current campaign and there are no signs of the Scottish captain relinquishing his spot in the team.
The 24-year-old signed a new long-term deal with the 18-time English champions earlier this month to secure his future in Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Moreno, 26, has been linked with a potential return to Spain in recent months and the former Sevilla defender spoke out against his manager in December.
Given his comments, Klopp might struggle to keep Moreno happy at the Merseyside outfit without the promise of first-team football.
Former Liverpool FC captain Barnes believes Moreno does have a future at the club – but needs to accept that he won’t be first choice.
“You need a strong squad,” Barnes told The Sport Review in an interview for bookmaker comparison platform BonusCodeBets.co.uk
“It’s a question of whether the players on the fringes are happy to be squad players. I’d be happy for Moreno to stay knowing that unless Andy gets injured or it’s not a top game, Moreno will play.
“It’s a question of whether he is happy and he will be committed to having the right attitude every time he plays for Liverpool.”
Moreno has only featured in 155 minutes in the Premier League this season after making two starts in the English top flight.
The Spanish defender moved to Liverpool FC in a £12m deal from Sevilla in the 2014 summer transfer window.
