Jamie Redknapp: Where Liverpool FC need to finish to keep Philippe Coutinho at Anfield
The Liverpool FC legend warns Jurgen Klopp a top-four finish is a must if the Reds are going to keep Philippe Coutinho
Jamie Redknapp believes Liverpool FC need to finish in the top four to have any chance of keeping Philippe Coutinho at Anfield.
The Brazil international has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona over the past 12 months or so.
Coutinho scored 13 goals and made seven assists to help Liverpool FC in the top four and secure Champions League football.
The 25-year-old hasn’t won any silverware since his move to the Reds in a £8.5m deal from Serie A giants Inter Milan in 2013.
Given the lack of trophies, Coutinho couldn’t be blamed for having his interest piqued with regards to a move to Barcelona.
Liverpool FC are in fourth place in the Premier League table in pursuit of successive seasons in the Champions League.
Former Reds captain Redknapp suggested that a top-four finish could boost the Merseyside outfit’s hopes of keeping Coutinho.
“They’ve had a taste of the Champions League,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “They’ve only been in it twice in the last eight years.
“They’ve got to be in it regularly. That might be what keeps Coutinho.”
Liverpool FC haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window to improve their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.
