Jamie Carragher has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool may find it difficult to attract top players until their place in Champions League group stage is assured.
The Reds secured a return to Europe’s premier club competition last season thanks to a fourth-place finish after a 3-0 win against Middlesbrough on the final day of the campaign.
Liverpool will compete in the Champions League for the first time since 2014-15 but the Reds must get past the playoff round to book their place in the group stage.
Klopp has already been linked with a host of different names in the summer transfer window as the German coach looks to improve his squad.
However, former Liverpool defender Carragher suggested that it could be difficult to secure their top targets until a place in the Champions League is secured.
“You want to be in all the top competitions,” Carragher told Sky Sports News HQ.
“(Champions League qualification) was a big thing for Liverpool but they’re still not there yet, they’ve still got a qualifying game.
“We’ve just got to make sure we get in it and hopefully that will attract the players.”
The Champions League play-off round first leg took place over 16 and 17 August 2016, while the second legs were held on 23 and 24 August in last season’s competition.
