Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool FC signing made no sense
The Liverpool FC manager should have signed a defender, not Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the summer, claims Eamon Dunphy
Eamon Dunphy has criticised Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of a new defender in the summer transfer window.
The Reds boss looked to sign Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk in the summer but the Merseyside outfit were unable to get a deal over the line for the centre-half.
Liverpool were forced to issue a statement apologising to the Saints about their pursuit of the Netherlands international.
Van Dijk handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a summer move but the Saints refused to budge and Van Dijk remained at the south coast club for the start of the 2017-18 season.
Liverpool signed Arsenal midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain in a £40m deal on transfer deadline day after the England international snubbed a potential move to Chelsea.
The 24-year-old hasn’t started a Premier League game since his move to Anfield and his only goal came in a 7-0 victory over Slovenian outfit Maribor.
Former Manchester United midfielder Dunphy blasted the Liverpool manager Klopp showed a lack of common sense with his transfer dealings.
“He just spent £40m on Oxlade Chamberlain, who was a squad player at Arsenal and will be at Liverpool. He’s got no position,” Dunphy told RTE Sport.
“Anyone with common sense and a sense of priority would have spent it on a defender.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League.
