Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas is backing Liverpool FC to make defensive recruits in the January transfer window

Jermaine Jenas is confident Liverpool FC will improve their defence in the January transfer window given their problems in the opening half of the season.
The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday after Wayne Rooney scored a controversial penalty to cancel out Mohamed Salah’s opener.
Liverpool FC have conceded four times in their last seven Premier League games to improve their defensive performances in the England top flight since a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Merseyside outfit conceded 16 goals in their opening nine Premier League fixtures to raise questions about their centre-halves Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip.
The Reds became the most prolific Premier League team in Champions League group-stage history following 23 goals in six games, but Liverpool FC conceded six times including a collapse at Sevilla.
The 18-time English champions were heavily linked with a move to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window but were unable to get a deal over the line.
Liverpool FC were pitted against Portuguese side FC Porto in their Champions League last-16 clash in February following Monday’s knockout draw.
Former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielders Jenas is backing Liverpool FC to improve their defence in January ahead of their clash against the 2004 champions.
“Their league defensive form hasn’t been that bad,” Jenas told BT Sport.
“In the Champions League, the standout fixture was conceding the three goals in Seville. They will strengthen in January.
“Whether the players he brings in are eligible to play in the Champions League, we’ll see. But I don’t think many teams will relish going to Anfield to play them.”
