Mark Lawrenson tells Liverpool FC to be ‘clever’ in January transfer window
The Liverpool FC legend wants Jurgen Klopp to sell Philippe Coutinho and make two or three signings in January

Mark Lawrenson has urged Liverpool to be clever in the January transfer market.
The Reds had the option to sell Philippe Coutinho in the summer but Liverpool refused to consider Barcelona’s numerous offers for the Brazil international.
The Brazil international even handed in a transfer request but the Merseyside refused to budge and consider selling Coutinho to the La Liga giants.
Liverpool missed out on the signing of Southampton club captain Virgil van Dijk as the Reds ended up without a centre-half recruit.
The Merseyside club lost 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley and Jurgen Klopp was forced to replace Dejan Lovren after 32 minutes given the centre-half’s disastrous performance.
Liverpool have already conceded 15 times in five games on the road in the Premier League to raise serious questions about Klopp’s defence.
However, former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Klopp should consider selling Coutinho and signing two or three players in the January transfer window.
“They have to be clever,” Lawrenson told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Maybe clever is selling Coutinho and signing two or three players in January. That’s the way they’ve got to go. They can’t compete with the big boys.”
Liverpool signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Hull City defender Andy Robertson, Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke in the summer transfer window.
The Merseyside outfit finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League.
