Insider delivers latest update on Liverpool’s link to 26-year-old Netherlands star
Sky Sports News reporter Paul Gilmour delivers the latest update on reports linking Liverpool with Virgil van Dijk
Southampton’s signing of Wesley Hoedt could affect Virgil van Dijk’s situation this summer, according to reporter Paul Gilmour.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move to sign Van Dijk from Southampton throughout the summer but a move for the Netherlands defender has failed to materialise, despite the player having handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s.
Southampton confirmed the signing of Netherlands centre-back Wesley Hoedt from Lazio for £15m on a five-year deal on Tuesday as the Saints moved to bolster their rearguard options.
And that has inevitably led to suggestions that Southampton are planning for life without Van Dijk at St Mary’s.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Tuesday morning, reporter Gilmour said: “Could Liverpool end up with Virgil van Dijk?
“Will that [Southampton signing Hoedt] have a direct impact on Van Dijk? He trained with Southampton’s Under-18s yesterday, he wants to leave the club.
“He handed in a transfer request and strongly criticised the club’s management.
“Southampton have said consistently again he is not for sale in this window.”
Liverpool were thought to be close to landing Van Dijk back in June but the move fell through after Southampton accused the Reds of an alleged illegal approach for the defender.
The Reds have signed three players so far this summer, after having tied up deals for Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke.
Liverpool are currently preparing to welcome Arsenal to Anfield on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League as they look to follow up their 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend with another three points.
