Liverpool legend concerned about reports of deal for 25-year-old
Steve Nicol expresses his reservations about Liverpool potentially closing a big-money transfer deal for Virgil van Dijk
Steve Nicol has expressed his reservations about reports suggesting that Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
The Reds have been heavily linked with a transfer bid to land the Southampton defender in recent days as Liverpool look to bolster their rearguard options at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp is thought to be on the lookout for a number of new signings as he prepares his team for a return to the Champions League next season.
Van Dijk looks like he could end up being Liverpool second signing of the summer after the Reds announced a deal to land Dominic Solanke from Chelsea.
However, former Liverpool defender Nicol is not convinced that a big-money deal to sign Van Dijk from Southampton would be worthwhile in terms of value.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Nicol said: “I do (like the deal), not at the price £60m.
“When I think of Van Dijk I think of Lovren. Lovren at Southampton was fantastic, as have Van Dijk has been.
“But Lovren since he’s come to Liverpool has shown that he can’t handle playing for a big club.
“That would be my one worry about Van Dijk. He’s had a great season, unfortunately he’s had an injury at the end of it. Will he be able to play for a big club? That’s my worry.”
Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League last season as they secured their place in next season’s Champions League.
