Liverpool FC would have the best centre-half pairing in world football if the Reds signed Matthijs de Ligt this summer, according to Transfer Window expert Ian McGarry.

The Netherlands international is being linked with a host of different clubs in the summer transfer window following De Ligt’s incredible season at Ajax.

De Ligt helped the Dutch side to reach the Champions League semi-finals thanks to victories over Juventus and Real Madrid before losing to Tottenham Hotspur on away goals.

Unsurprisingly, Ajax’s talismanic defender has been attracting a lot of interest from club’s around Europe given the maturity of his performances at the age of 19.

De Ligt’s centre-half partner in the Netherlands team is Liverpool FC’s all-conquering defender Virgil van Dijk, who won his first Champions League title last weekend.

The 28-year-old was named man of the match for his performance in Liverpool FC’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid.

Transfer Window reporter McGarry believes Liverpool FC should sign De Ligt to partner the teenager with Van Dijk and create the world’s best centre-half pairing.

“I guess a very obvious question to ask would be: where are Liverpool in all of this?” McGarry told The Transfer Window podcast.

“Given that they already have Van Dijk, De Ligt’s central-defensive partner for the Netherlands, at the club, they’ve seen the success they have achieved and indeed the plaudits Van Dijk has gained for the way that he has marshalled that defence.

“It seems to me that De Ligt and Van Dijk together could potentially be the best centre-half pairing in the world.

“Having just become Champions League winners for the sixth time, I suspect Jurgen Klopp would think that he has got the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket to do exactly what he wants in the transfer market.”

Liverpool FC won their first major trophy under Klopp thanks to their 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi sealed a comfortable win.
