Robbie Savage has questioned why Liverpool didn’t move to sign Michael Keane this summer.
The Reds were initially linked with a potential bid to bring the former Manchester United defender to Anfield from Burnley.
However, Liverpool appeared to focus their efforts on signing Netherlands international and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.
The 26-year-old has handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force a move to a top club in the current transfer window.
However, Southampton are thought to be reluctant to sell to Liverpool despite the Reds issuing a statement apologising to the Saints earlier this summer.
Keane, on the other hand, completed a £25m switch to Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton to improve Ronald Koeman’s defence.
Former Leicester City and Manchester United midfielder Savage questioned why Liverpool didn’t rival Everton for the signing of the England international.
Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Michael Keane was £25m to Everton. He oozed class for Everton. Liverpool could have gone for him for £25m or £30m.”
Liverpool conceded a late equaliser to settle for a 3-3 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road in their Premier League opener on Saturday afternoon.
Everton were 1-0 winners against Stoke City thanks to Wayne Rooney’s winner at Goodison Park.
The Reds have signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson.
