Sky Sports reporter outlines the signings Liverpool FC could make
Sky Sports reporter Vinny O'Connor suggests Liverpool FC could make signings in attacking and defensive positions this summer
Liverpool FC could look to target a left-back and a striker in the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor.
The Reds battled with Manchester City throughout the Premier League season before the Merseyside outfit ultimately missed out on the title by a point.
Indeed, the Citizens were 4-1 winners against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on the final day of the season to secure successive Premier League titles.
Liverpool FC put together an impressive run to amass 97 points, which is the highest amount of any Premier League runner-up in the history of the division.
As their points tally suggests, the Reds don’t have too many areas of weakness in the squad following a brilliant domestic campaign for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
However, Liverpool FC do lack the depth of the reigning Premier League champions, with a heavy reliance on their star frontline of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
Sky Sports reporter O’Connor suggested that Liverpool FC could look to add more numbers to their squad in defensive and attacking positions this summer.
“Given the consistency Liverpool have shown this season, it’ll be a case of the odd tweak with their squad,” O’Connor told Sky Sports.
“Daniel Sturridge is out of contract, so Liverpool are exploring the possibility of strengthening their attacking options.
“Divock Origi has shown glimpses this season while both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah have played through the middle. Even Gini Wijnaldum stepped into the role against Barcelona, but Liverpool need greater cover for the influential Roberto Firmino.
“Naby Keita is expected to be better for the experience of his first season in English football. While, as cliched as it may be, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return to fitness after a year out will be like a new signing, which means midfield is unlikely to be an issue.
“Alberto Moreno will leave the club this summer, so cover and competition at left back for Andy Robertson is another area that will need addressing.
“Liverpool are also being talked of as possible suitors for Matthijs de Ligt in a £75m deal to further improve a back line that kept 21 Premier League clean sheets. The Ajax centre back has established a partnership with Virgil Van Dijk at international level.
“It will be interesting to see if Simon Mignolet decides to look for regular first team football, which could leave Liverpool needing an experienced deputy for Alisson.”
Liverpool FC finished with the best defence in the Premier League this season and Virgil van Dijk won the PFA player of the year award.
The Reds will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final on 1 June.
