Virgil van Dijk will move to Liverpool FC ahead of Manchester City, according to Kevin Kilbane
Kevin Kilbane has backed Liverpool FC to sign Virgil van Dijk ahead of Manchester City.
The Netherlands international has been linked with a January move away from Southampton following a tough 2017-18 season so far.
Van Dijk has been linked with Premier League leaders Manchester City and fourth-placed Liverpool FC ahead of next month’s transfer window.
The 26-year-old appeared to be on the brink of a move to Liverpool FC in the summer before a move fell through.
Indeed, the Reds were forced to issue an apology to the Saints after the south coast club threatened to report their Premier League rivals for an alleged tapping up.
Van Dijk even handed in a transfer request but Southampton refused to budge and the ex-Celtic man remained at St Mary’s.
Manchester City appear on course to win the Premier League title given their 16-point advantage over their closest rivals Manchester United.
Former Republic of Ireland defender Kilbane believes Van Dijk will still end up at Liverpool FC despite the lure of Manchester City.
“We’re led to believe – and I believe it to be true – Klopp has turned his head massively. Klopp has sold the Liverpool dream to Van Dijk,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He was going to choose Liverpool over Chelsea and Man City who were in for him at the time. He sees a real legacy prospect in going to Liverpool.
“Even long after he’s finished, he sees himself as a player who could be long associated with that club. That’s the thing Klopp sold to him.
“Given the choice, he could win the Premier league if he goes to Man City but is he going to change his mind that dramatically in a couple of months? I think if Liverpool come back in, he’ll go there.”
