Liverpool FC could find it tough to convince Virgil van Dijk to move to Anfield ahead of Manchester City, Gary Breen has warned.
The Reds were heavily linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international in the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise.
Indeed, Liverpool FC were forced to issue an apology to Southampton after the Saints threatened to report the Reds for an alleged tapping up.
Van Dijk even handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a transfer but Southampton refused to alter their stance on the 26-year-old.
Liverpool FC have conceded 23 times in 19 games in the Premier League this season to raise serious questions about Jurgen Klopp’s back four.
The Reds have been touted with a fresh approach to sign Van Dijk in January, but worryingly for Liverpool FC fans, Manchester City are interested.
The Premier League leaders are 16 points clear at the top of the table with 19 games to go in what looks like a one-sided title race.
Former Republic of Ireland defender Breen suggested that Liverpool FC will find it tough to compete with Manchester City.
“They could be bullied out of it by Man City,” Breen told Newstalk.
“If you’re a player and you have a choice between Liverpool and Man City, who are you going to go to?”
Liverpool were held to a 3-3 draw with Arsenal in their last Premier League fixture at The Emirates on Friday night.
