The Arsenal legend warns that Liverpool FC may have missed their chance to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk

Alan Smith has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool FC may have missed their chance to sign Virgil van Dijk.
The Netherlands international was heavily linked with a move to the Anfield outfit in the summer transfer window but Liverpool FC failed to get a deal over the line.
Indeed, the Merseyside club were forced to issue an apology to Southampton about their pursuit of the former Celtic defender.
Van Dijk handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move but Liverpool FC were forced to stick with Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip for the current campaign.
Liverpool FC have conceded 20 times in 17 games in the Premier League this term to raise questions about their back four under Klopp.
Premier League leaders Manchester City have now been touted as a potential destination for Van Dijk in January given Vincent Kompany’s incessant injury problems.
The 18-time English champions have also been linked with a fresh approach for the Southampton club captain.
Former Arsenal striker Smith believes Liverpool FC may have squandered their best chance to recruit the 26-year-old centre-half.
“I do think (Ragnar) Klavan coming in has made a bit of a difference. But how they’d love to get Virgil van Dijk in, maybe that ship has sailed,” Smith told Sky Sports News on Friday.
“It sounds like Pep Guardiola might be interested in the Southampton centre-half. I think there are still questions to be answered.”
Liverpool FC will make the trip to Southampton’s south coast rivals Bournemouth on Sunday.
