Steven Gerrard admits he would love to see Virgil van Dijk play for Liverpool next season
Steven Gerrard has admitted that he would love to see Liverpool complete the signing of Virgil van Dijk this summer.
The Reds were thought to be closing in on the signing of the talented Netherlands defender last week but Southampton were unhappy by Liverpool’s approach to the proposed transfer.
Liverpool were forced to issue an apology to the Saints and release a statement revealing that they were dropping their interest in signing the player this summer.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Reds could still return to St Mary’s with a fresh bid to sign the defender.
Speaking before last week’s transfer debacle, Gerrard admitted that he would love to see Van Dijk line up for Liverpool next season.
Gerrard is quoted as saying by the Daily Star: “I’d love to see him in a red shirt. I’m a huge fan.
“I thought he was fantastic at Celtic and I thought we should have had a go for him back then.
“It will cost us a few more quid but I think he is a piece of the jigsaw that would be very welcome and very big for this team.”
Liverpool are thought to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as Jurgen Klopp prepares his team for a return to the Champions League next season.
The Reds finished fourth in the table last term, a point ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal.
