Pundit sends message to Liverpool fans about proposed summer signing
Matt Le Tissier discusses the prospect of Liverpool completing a deal to sign Virgil van Dijk this summer
Matt Le Tissier believes it is unlikely Liverpool will sign Virgil van Dijk this summer – even if the defender puts in a transfer request at Southampton.
The Reds were heavily linked with a bid to sign the Dutch defender last week and were thought to be closing in on a deal to bring him to Anfield.
However, Southampton were not impressed by the way Liverpool conducted their business and the Reds were forced to issue a statement apologising for their actions and declaring that they had ended their interest in the defender.
There have been suggestions that Liverpool’s hopes of signing Van Dijk this summer are still not over, and that the player could help force through a move by handing in a transfer request.
However, former Southampton star Le Tissier now feels that it is unlikely Van Dijk will end up at Anfield this summer.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Le Tissier said: “With what’s gone on I think it would be certainly be highly unlikely, even if Virgil puts a transfer request in, that he’d go to Liverpool this summer.
“The club have no interest in selling Virgil this summer.
“He’s got five years left on his contract and he’s the captain of the club, and the club’s intention is to keep him.
“But if a world-record bid comes in, then of course every player has their price.”
Jurgen Klopp will be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as he prepares his team for a return to the Champions League next season.
