Gary Neville has suggested Liverpool made a mistake not selling Philippe Coutinho in the summer transfer window and buying a new centre-half and goalkeeper.

The Merseyside outfit finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term and secured a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.

Jurgen Klopp signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, the Liverpool boss failed to sign a centre-half despite pursing Southampton club captain Virgil van Dijk throughout the summer transfer window.

Klopp has stuck with his two goalkeepers Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius in the Champions League and the Premier League in the 2017-18 season so far.

Liverpool managed to fend off interest from Barcelona in Coutinho, even though the 25-year-old handed in a transfer request following an offer worth an estimated £116m.

Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Klopp made a potential mistake not selling Coutinho and investing the funds in adding to their spine.

“Coutinho is wonderful player but maybe you could have taken a 100m and signed a top goalkeeper and centre-half,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Liverpool already have so many types in Firmino, Salah, Sturrridge, Lallana.

“You can’t argue with the decision to keep Coutinho.”

Coutinho has scored four goals in seven starts in the Champions League and the Premier League this season.

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table.
