Virgil van Dijk sent clear warning ahead of Liverpool FC v Real Madrid
Graeme Souness has a warning for Virgil van Dijk ahead of Liverpool FC's Champions League clash with Real Madrid
Graeme Souness has warned Virgil van Dijk that he will have to prove himself as Liverpool FC’s defensive main man when the Reds take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday.
The Netherlands defender has been settling well into life at Anfield after having signed for the Reds from Southampton in the January transfer window.
Van Dijk has been in solid form for the Reds and played a key role in helping Liverpool FC to beat the likes of Manchester City and FC Porto en route to reaching the final.
He will have his work cut out in trying to keep the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo quiet when the Reds take on the Spanish giants in Kiev in the final this weekend.
And former Liverpool FC star Souness feels that Van Dijk will have to prove his worth on the biggest stage during the Champions League final on Saturday night.
Souness is quoted as saying by the Daily Star: “There’s still a question mark over Loris Karius, the goalkeeper, and he’ll have to make saves.
“I see Virgil van Dijk as being Liverpool’s main man defensively for the future and we’ll have a better idea after this final if that’s the case.
“He needs to be at his best to keep Ronaldo and Karim Benzema quiet.”
Liverpool FC head into the game after having booked their place in the Champions League next season by securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Reds are likely to be linked with a host of players this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to build a team capable of winning the title next term.
