Jamie Carragher says the Merseyside derby is a bigger game for Liverpool than their clashes with rivals Manchester United.

The 35-year-old centre-half is set to feature in his final derby against Everton at Anfield on Sunday ahead of his retirement, with the defender initially a Toffees supporter before joining Liverpool’s youth system.

The latest instalment of the Merseyside derby takes on extra meaning with Everton able to finish ahead of the Reds with victory over Brendan Rodgers’s men this weekend.

And Carragher says Everton’s proximity and their desperation to beat Liverpool makes the local derby a much bigger affair than facing reigning Premier League champions United.

“If I could only win one game every year it would be the derby without a shadow of a doubt,” Carragher told the Daily Mirror.

“I totally get the Man United/Liverpool thing but for me playing Everton is bigger. If you get beat by United the fans are 40 minutes down the road, but you can’t get away from Evertonians.

“Also Everton love beating Liverpool more than we do beating them. Knowing how much they want to win makes you even more determined. It was like that when I was a kid. I just wanted to beat Liverpool.”

Carragher is set to retire at the end of the season after making 734 appearances in a career spanning 16 years at Anfield.
