Jamie Redknapp heaped praise on Liverpool signing Andy Robertson after the defender’s promising debut in a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp handed Robertson his first Premier League start since moving to the Merseyside outfit in an £8m deal from Hull City earlier in the summer transfer window.

Robertson gave the Reds a different option going forward, while the Scotland international helped Liverpool to keep their first clean sheet of the 2017-18 season.

The 23-year-old will be hoping to retain his place in the Liverpool team for their home clash against Hoffenheim in the second leg of their Champions League playoff on Wednesday night.

Former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp is excited about Robertson’s potential following his promising debut in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

“Liverpool have a proud history of great Scottish players, such as Dalglish and Souness… and they may have another in Andrew Robertson,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.

“James Milner did well at left back last season but Liverpool needed a specialist there. Robertson gave Liverpool balance against Crystal Palace.

“He offers another option down the left and his delivery was superb.

“If Philippe Coutinho stays, Robertson will let him cut inside and shoot more frequently.

“There will be greater tests of his defensive capabilities but he will prove a very astute signing.”

Robertson scored one goal in nine appearances in all competitions during the 2016-17 season for Hull City before securing a move to Liverpool.

Liverpool boss Klopp opted to start vice-captain James Milner at left-back last term after Alberto Moreno fell out-of-favour under the German coach.

Moreno moved to Liverpool in a £14m deal from Sevilla in the 2014 summer transfer window under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers but the Spanish defender has failed to realise his potential.
